My name isn't "Bob".

Steve83, United States of America (Reviewer Ranking: 3) wrote this review on August 20, 2006:

Based on a silent French film in which a man goes back in time and dies in front of his younger self, 12 Monkeys is not only an outstanding psychological thriller, but also a decent whodunit, and a worthwhile love story, all rolled up inside the trademark Terry Gilliam style. Although he was only hired to direct, his twists on the story are unmistakable, even without viewing the bonus feature "The Hamster Factor". Only a Python could come up with the body condom & the birth canal time machine. Pitt's performance is undoubtedly the best of his career - he MUST have actually been insane during filming to play it so perfectly. Stowe is sexy & empathetic as the heroine torn between her professional diagnosis of her mysterious patient, and the inexplicable insight he has on seemingly trivial events. Is he mad? Or is everyone else? Did he really come back in time? Or is he "mentally divergent"? No way to know for sure, Bob...
