A Worthy Remake

Though genre fans cried foul at the very notion of remaking George Romero’s 1978 living dead masterpiece Dawn Of The Dead, director Zack Snyder’s revamp is both respectful of the source material and an entirely worthy film in its own right. There’s really nothing wrong with running zombies (Return Of The Living Dead had them way back in 1984), and Snyder’s version of Dawn is an amped up, action oriented retelling throughout. The first fifteen minutes is cinematic perfection, better conveying the sense of a world gone to hell overnight in one brief, deftly edited sequence than any other flick about the zombie apocalypse I could cite. Though Snyder fumbles the ball a bit with a nihilistic coda he intersperses with the end credits, his take on Romero’s creation is largely on target. He can be forgiven for not noticing that Uncle George wisely left the ultimate fate of his heroes up to each viewer’s own imagination.
